DELAWARE COUNTY, OHIO—The Delaware County Commissioners have officially proclaimed May 2026 as Older Americans Month, recognizing the lasting contributions, leadership, and impact of older adults throughout the community.
Observed each May since its establishment in 1963, Older Americans Month highlights the important role older adults play in strengthening communities through experience, service, and civic engagement. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” encourages individuals and communities alike to prioritize wellness, connection, and active aging.
SourcePoint, Delaware County’s primary provider of aging services, joined the commissioners this week to present its second Age-Friendly Action Plan—an ongoing effort to ensure the community remains a place where every person age 55 and better can thrive. The plan focuses on improving access to services, enhancing opportunities for social connection, and promoting health and independence for older adults across the county.
“Older adults are the backbone of our community,” said Fara Waugh, CEO. “They are our community’s leaders, volunteers, caregivers, mentors, neighbors—and increasingly, active members of today’s workforce—who continue to give their time, wisdom, and energy to make Delaware County stronger.”
In fact, a growing number of adults aged 55 and older remain in or reenter the workforce, contributing their skills and experience across industries. Research consistently shows that staying engaged through work or volunteering can support both physical and mental health, helping individuals maintain purpose, social connection, and overall well-being, all key components of healthy aging.
That same spirit of engagement is reflected in the community through volunteerism. Volunteers—many of whom are older adults themselves—play a critical role in sustaining this impact. Each year, more than 60,000 volunteer hours are contributed in support of programs that serve local residents, including delivering meals, assisting with enrichment activities, and helping neighbors remain connected and independent.
Through programs such as Meals on Wheels, caregiver support services, and a wide range of wellness and enrichment opportunities, SourcePoint supports thousands of older adults annually—helping them maintain their health, independence, and quality of life.
The proclamation reinforces Delaware County’s commitment to ensuring older adults have access to the resources and opportunities they need to stay healthy, engaged, and connected. It also serves as a call to action for residents of all ages to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of older adults in our community.
Throughout May, community members are encouraged to participate in local events, volunteer their time, and take steps to support the well-being of older adults.
